Here’s How to Master Your Master Bedroom
You want your master bedroom to be your ultimate safe haven and retreat, providing you with extreme comfort. When you’re looking for tips on creating an inviting sanctuary, it’s likely you’re thinking colors, fabrics, textures.
When you’re wondering “how can I sell my house quickly?” think about creating a master bedroom sanctuary.
In my mind that desired relaxation begins with a great mattress. Yes, I know a mattress isn’t what you first consider when talking about decorating tips! But it is the foundation for any good bedroom.
Once you have a good mattress, let’s look at the aesthetic layers of your bedding that bring you comfort as well as beauty. Make the choices that make you extremely happy, the ones that look good and feel good.
Personally, I love a pillow top over my mattress to give me an extra layer of comfort. Many liken sleeping on a soft, cushy mattress pad to “sleeping on a cloud.” Sheets come next and you can find them in a variety of thread counts, fabrics and weaves. Sateen, cotton and flannel are a few examples. Choose what feels the most luxurious to you. It is really a matter of personal preference.
For your blankets, do you prefer down or a down alternative? How about a coverlet or quilt? Your choice of topping for the bedding ensemble lets you quickly change your room’s personality. Whatever your choice, pay attention to the ease of washing it.
Drape a coverlet across your bed for added interest
It’s best to keep bed covers in soothing neutral tones. Like clothing, a layered bed offers you variety. Perhaps you drape a coverlet across your bed and fold a down comforter along the bottom of the bed for extra warmth.
Your pillows offer another source of comfort. Pillows are not only used for sleeping, but also to sit up in bed or elevate your head for reading. It is best to have a minimum of two pillows for each side of the bed. Use a decorative sham that matches your bedding on one pillow and a simple pillowcase that matches your sheets on the other.
Hopefully your bed came with a headboard that you love. If it didn’t, you can certainly use European pillows across the back of your bed or make your own padded headboard in an afternoon.

Once you have the main attraction of the master bedroom established to provide you ultimate comfort and beauty, you can branch out from there and build the rest of the room around it. If you have carpeting, keep it neutral too. If you have hardwood flooring, opt for a rug to go under your bed. It’s an added layer of luxury that will feel nice on your feet when you step out of bed, especially on cold mornings.
Bedside tables for each side of the bed should provide ample storage, as well as please your eye. Other furniture pieces in the room should afford functionality and coordinate with the bed and bedside tables. It’s best not to overcrowd the room with too much furniture or have more than one purpose for your bedroom, such as using it as a working office.
Follow the same rules for lighting as you do for your furniture. Go for both functional and beautiful.
Lastly, artwork will bring it all together. Make sure the piece behind your bed is commanding and beautiful and that seeing it will make you happy every day. Incorporate other art throughout the room only if it brings you the joy!
At the end of the day, the master bedroom should be the one room in the house where you find the most physical comfort and delight. Building the bed first and then designing around it should give you a room that successfully accomplishes just that!
